BRIAN SHRADER: DIVISION 4A II STATE CHAMPION 1600m
Brian scooted right along with the field saw his moment with a mere 550m to go and pulled away from the field and won with a time of 4:20.04 a new personal record and school record for the young Mustang.
Women’s 4 x 800m RUNS 10:08.92
Megan Palley was back on the opening leg and put the team in good position. We went to shot and disc thrower Emily Fisher who fought her way in the pack. Then Becca Gazar made some serious ground running her fastest relay split ever (2:29) and her teammate Alexandra Myers posted her best relay split as well with a 2:22 and catapulted the team to a 7th place and New School Record.
Brian Shrader: 3rd in the 800m.
No one wanted to come out and play, so Brian took the responsibilities of the lead in the 2 lap race. Once he got to 300m it was obvious there would be no early takers and he pressed the pace all the further. He rounded a 55 split and off the turn into the back stretch he was passed two fellows. Brian held to 3rd with a 1:55.58 and a New School Record and a new PR.
Becca Gazar: Makes the 3200m race.
The Women’s 3200m run saw Hanna Moen of Coconino out early with a hard opening lap. The chase pack quickly formed with Becca Gazar right behind it. After 2 laps Becca went through the 5 women pack and headed for the leader. She bridged the gap between the pack and Hanna. Through that Mustang ladder Hanna of Rio Rico was able to contend with Hanna Moen. Meanwhile Becca held solid in 5th position and surged over and again to keep position. Up top despite a couple of challenges via the Rio Rico Hanna, Hanna Moen of Coconino was able to capture the state title breaking the 11:00 barrier. Becca posted a PR time of 11:48.22. I should also mention that little Dillin posted a 55.39 split in the men’s 4 x 400. (he’d been posting 58’s until today - that’s what the energy of the state meet can do.)
*We come back to Mesa Community College on Saturday for more fun on the track.

4 x 800m Women: *10:14.73 - 3rd Place Finish - State Qualifying Race.
The race went Emily Fisher a sub from the shot put ring that kept us in striking range. To Megan Palley, maintained position and then a close that boosted the Mustangs to another spot closer to the lead. Becca Gazar pushed the Mustangs to the top 3. Alex Myers - held steady for home and secured a 3rd place finish and an entry to the state meet.
4 x 800m Men: 8:38.88 - 4 th Place Finish - Mateo Trujillo - a substitute for the team and a remarkable man stepping in to do his best for the team. A week ago Mateo was in the hospital with an illness. He handed off to Dillin Hatch who set up the Mustangs to get into striking distance. Geddy Morales - another substitute for the Mustangs he comes off the jumps pit to help out the track team. He handed the baton to Brian Shrader - If I told you his split you would not believe me anyway. He pulled us to 4th- a mere .53 seconds from 3rd: A valiant effort by all team members.
1600m - Men: Featured Mustang runners Brian Shrader - 1st - 4:25.69 and Dillin Hatch 6th - *4:44.01. The race was choreographed and performed by the two teammates. Brian worked the angles from up front while Dillin stirred things inside the pack. In the end Brian displayed a little of finishing number. Dillin mustered his way into a scoring position and the two Mustangs were elated beyond belief.
1600m - Women: Alexandra Myers - 5:22.07 - 3rd place Becca Gazar - *5:34.65, 5th place, Megan Palley - *6:03.18 - 12th place.
The pace was pressed early by Hanna Moen. The chase pack included: Myers, Gazar, Chloe Philips of Flagstaff and a feisty Rochelle Kanuho of Coconino. The jostling went between the Mustangs and the Panther while the Eagle sat tight. Palley pressed from the thick of the field and fought for every inch of ground she could gain. In the chase pack, Gazar mixed things up inside 800m to go. Gazar’s assist catapulted Myers into a State qualifying positions and as it turned out Gazar’s time will help round out the field at the Championship meet. Megan came home with another personal record in the 1600m.
800m Men: Brian Shrader 1:57.24. In comparison it was a soft start. The young lad was behind at 200m into the 2 lapper. The Shrader side-step gave him the lead and from there he never looked back.
800m Women: Alexandra Myers - 2:27.21 - 3rd Place, Megan Palley 2:45.54 - 9th
Hanna Moen took the pace early and kept every one pressed. 120m into the race the top 3 had been established and there were no position changes after 120m. Coming off her mile PR, Megan Palley was feeling a little less spunky on this event, but managed a mid 2:40’s bid.
3200m: Men: Brian Shrader *9:39.98 - 1st Place, Dillin Hatch - *10:32.79.
Two surprises came to the Mustangs on this one. First surprise: that it took little effort to string out the competitors. Second surprise: the depth of the Grand Canyon Region in this event. The number Dillin and Brian were stepping to, required a pack formation. Despite having to adjust the plan they both came home with personal records.
3200m: Women: Becca Gazar -12:20.62 4th Place, Becky Penado - 13:55.21
An aggressive start gave the lady Panthers, Hanna Moen and Rochelle Kanuho a 1-2 punch up top. The rest of the field was strung out looking to climb a ladder. Becca climbed as high as 4th. Because of the early push the first half of Becky’s race was very aggressive leaving her to hang on during the second half.
So that you can get an idea of what is happening with the Sinagua distance crew I am posing this math fact. Last years the Women’s Distance team which consisted of these same gals plus two others in these same events scored a total of 3 points. This year the Mustang Women’s Distance squad mustered 24 points. Last year the Men’s team had 22 points in these events and this year 35 points were gathered by the Distance squad.
State qualifiers from the Sinagua distance squad include:
Brian Shrader - 1600m, 800m, 3200m, 4 x 400m
Dillin Hatch - 4 x 400m
Alexandra Myers - 1600m, 800m, 4 x 800m
Becca Gazar - 1600m, 3200m, 4 x 800m
Megan Palley - 4 x 800m
Emily Fisher is a Shotput and Discus thrower that will be subbing in that 4 x 800m.

Travis Laird: Breaks 14:00 at Mt. SAC!|
Travis Laird continues his trek toward greatness. Laird proved to have some magical race savvy in his belt despite his 2 year hiatus from the track. He nestled right into the pack and rode the fast train home, with a time of 13:59.91, less than 5 seconds from his personal record (P.R.). Like most Mt. SAC races the field remained tight throughout the full 5,000m. Although Travis placed 13th, he was on the same straightaway as the winner and only 10.60 seconds off the lead.

Travis Laird: Wins ASU SUN ANGEL 5k.

The young lad from Northern Arizona via San Diego, CA, had to make last minute race adjustments and, as a result, overcame a field of elite and collegiate runners alike. The pack broke early making it a three man race that soon dwindled to a two-man battle--leaving Travis to contend with Mike Torchia of Minnesota. In the late stages of the race Travis broke away and continued the trip toward home and a win, with a time of 14:11.99.
When speaking of the race Laird commented that he was pleased with the outcome since it was his first venture onto the competitive track in nearly two years.
